Caswell Avenue
These pictures were all taken in the 1970s in and around the house where we lived for eight years in Hyde Park. None of the pictures show the house itself, a gray shingle cottage; it was hard to see anyway, being shrouded in overgrown yellow jasmine, ligustrum, nandina and Turk's cap.
We didn't have air conditioning back then, but the windows opened and a breeze blew through even on the hottest days. The wind blew through in the winter, too. Brrr! Tulip was the dog next door who came to visit every day. You can see her lying in the back gate. The resident stray cat's name, Squash, proved sadly prophetic as the streets around our house got busier.

Look at the airplane at the top of the picture! The house is hidden in the shrubs on the left. This was a very noisy place to live before the airport moved away.
During Hurricane Allan, a tornado came within half a block of our house, wrecking havoc at nearby Ragsdale Field and twisting up the local mailbox. At the time of the Memorial Day flood, our backyard was under several inches of water.
It was on Caswell Avenue that we knew Tulip and Jojo and adopted Pirate. Katie Gray was our neighbor across the street, and Craig turned 30, the occasion of a memorable surprise party.
